Clutter and You

The word clutter is thrown around everywhere but what does it mean to you? Well, these feelings, emotions and words commonly come to mind for a lot of people when thinking of “Clutter.”

Dirty, Mess, Prisoner, Stress, Sadness, Shame, Guilt, Unorganised, Struggling to think clearly, Panicky.

Thinking of “Decluttered”, the feelings and emotions change drastically.

Cleansed, Tidy Spaces, Freedom, Calm, Happiness, Acceptance, Organised, Clear thinking, Peaceful, Relaxed.

Oppressive to freeing, so much nicer!

REASONS YOU MIGHT NEED HELP, DO YOU RECOGNISE ANY OF THESE?

  • You've naturally built up clutter over time and feel there’s never enough room in your home for all your stuff. You’re feeling completely overwhelmed with it.
  • You’re struggling, physically, mentally or emotionally to deal with it on your own.
  • You’re clearing out a loved one’s home after they’ve passed away.
  • You’re downsizing and don’t know where to start with everything you’ve spent decades accumulating.
  • You’re split from a partner and need to get rid of their things.
  • You’re getting older and weaker and haven't got the strength / energy to deal with everything.
  • You’re just too busy to deal with it. Work, studying, children, animals take up all your time.
  • You’re attached to sentimental things and can’t let go of them.
Whatever the reasons, I will always be completely non-judgemental and patient. I understand how difficult it can be to make tough decisions.

Reasons I hear for not wanting to get rid of stuff....

  • I might use it one day even though I haven't used it for the last ten years.

  • It was really expensive.

  • It was a present and I feel guilty getting rid of it.

  • It belonged to my mum, dad, grandma, dog, best friend, son, daughter, pet aardvark.

  • I’m waiting for these flares, drainpipes, jackets with huge shoulder pads, Super 8 tracks, to come back into fashion.

  • Someday these 800 colouring pens might be worth a lot of money.

  • You can never have enough carrier bags, old Sky boxes and mobile phones from the 90s.

Sound familiar?

Being totally honest with you, I can relate to all of them. In the past, I've struggled to let things go for all the above reasons. This includes the flares, 800 colouring pens and the jackets with shoulder pads! I‘m an 80’s boy and they were all the rage!

Reasons you might give for struggling to deal with clutter....

  • I've just run out of space to put everything.

  • It’s too overwhelming to deal with.

  • I’m too busy.

  • I can’t be bothered.

  • I think it'll always be like this, it feels impossible to deal with.

If you’re honest, how do you feel in your own home?

Do you feel like a prisoner, trapped and feeling miserable? Do you dread coming into the house as you know the stifling environment that awaits you.

Or, do you feel free, light, calm and happy? Are you excited to walk through the doors of your house and relax? Well, as you’re reading this I’m guessing you’re not number two.

It’s common to have feelings of guilt and shame around clutter. This can lead to isolating and shutting yourself off from the world. Too embarrassed to invite anyone round for fear of judgment is something I hear a lot from clients.

Sometimes we can’t handle it on our own and that’s why I’m here.

Physical, mental or emotional issues can make it difficult to declutter and reclaim your precious space. these can include Depression, ADHD, fibromyalgia, arthritis and many more.
